Humberstone Speedway's Mothers Day program Sunday night was frigidly presented by Tianna's Jewelry as temperatures hit the mid to upper 30s but the racing warmed up the hearty dedicated crowd.
Leading the 24 car 25 lap Cosco Haulage Sportsman field to the green was rookie Rob Murray with Murray holding down the fort for thew first 6 laps. His pace was slowed on lap 6 as Rick Bellante and last weeks winner Ryan Susice got together in turn 1. Two more brief yellows flew on laps 7 and 8 but not before the lead changed with Brad Rouse taking the lead off turn 4. Rouse chose the outside line for the restart and the battle behind Rouse was fierce. Bill Gill and Dave Dykstra came together to slow the field. On the restart Don Spatorico gave chase to Rouse with all he had and finally hunted him down in the remaining laps and took the lead with a few to go. Rouse would jump the cushion in turn 4 but held off Nick Cupolo at the checkered flag. Rounding out the top 5 were: Don Spatorico, Rouse, Cupolo, Greg Panunte, and Darrell Farraway.
In the 20 Brian's Tire Repair Street Stock feature with 21 starters Jaren Israel and rookie Kevin Aube had the field covered and would be off to their own race away from the solid field. All 4 corners of the tacky surface were full of action as the leader fought hard with lap traffic. 14 year old rookie James Thompson brought out the yellow on lap 15. The remaining 5 laps would see a stirring battle with Israel holding off Aube for the victory, next in line was Dave Small, Kevin Knapp and Jason Fontaine rounding out the top 5.
The Ron's Automotive Mini Stock 15 lap feature was a tightly wrapped battle that you could drop a warm Winter blanket on with Garnet Wilson, holding off the charges of Brandon Iudiciani as well as Aaron Wiley, Rob Overholt and Rob Goulding at the final flag.
In the Niagara Auto Sales Pro 4 Truck 15 lapper, “The Flying Frenchman” Andy Imbeault did not miss a beat and the race looked to go caution free but the only yellow came out for Jeff Mark who was looking the wrong way on the one way street. Imbeault was followed by Rick Book, Billy Beales, Hilary Haegens, and brother Greg Haegens.
2010's first Frontier Auto Dismantler feature of the season was led to the green by heat winner Mike Thompson with Issac Pelissero and Sam Iftody battling side by side. Unfortunately Thompson miss-cued and suffered a broken axel for his troubles. Pellissero would claim his first ever victory holding off Mike Greene, Ronning, Iftody, and Tyler Lafontasie.
A Figure 8 Race was held to complete the Mothers Day program but the winners name was UNAVAILABLE. We will have it in next weeks results.
POST RACE THOUGHTS: With 2 weeks in and no repeat winners, 2010 looks to be very close and competitive. The Pure Stocks made their debut and they went with heads up events from heats to feature. Up next at Humberstone Speedway on May 16th will be Hamblets Roofing and Siding Night with the mighty Young Automotive Professional 358 Modifieds joining the HSWS regular divisions plus the Vintage Race Cars and they will also run heats and a feature. Please note May 23rd after the race program, a post race party will take place and the 2010 Miss Humberstone will be named.
