Gordon, Susice, Bleich, Haegens and Conte claim Humberstone opener wins.
GORDON, SUSICE, BLEICH, HAEGENS AND CONTE CLAIM HUMBERSTONE OPENER
Under heavy threats by the weather Gods, Toffolo Enterprises presented the 51st Season opener at Pt. Colborne's Humberstone Speedway Sunday Night. With a full 5 division show in hand a good opening night program was presented for the 2010 season.
In the Young Automotive Professional 358 Modified 30 lap feature, the field was led to the green by Mike Bowman and Todd Gordon with Gordon taking the lead. Gordon would find the top to his advantage. Mike Bowman started 6th and would take the runner up spot by lap 7. With Gordon on the top Bowman made the trip to the bottom. James Michael Friesen came to a halt to slow the field. Rob Pietz made a nice move to take over 2nd on lap 15. The battle for 2nd was a dandy with Pietz and Bowman. Tommy Flannigan and Rich Vinson waged a war for the 4th spot with Vinson holding the advantage but Chad Brachmann would also close quickly into the top 5 with 5 to go. Back up front Pietz on the bottom and Gordon on top would have the fans on their feet. With Gordon picking up the win over Pietz, Brachmann, Bowman and Flannigan rounding out the top 5.
In the 25 lap Cosco Haulage Sportsman feature, Cody McPherson and Ryan Susice with Mc Pherson grabbing the lead with Susice on the charge. Greg Panunte started third and is showing his strength on the outside. Lap 5 Panunte made a nice outside pass for the lead but the yellow would fly for Bill Gill and Doug Banner on lap 6. Panunte would grab the green on the restart. Nick Cupolo would strut his stuff to the top 3. Susice would take over 2nd and took a shot at Panunte on lap 13. Lap 15 Susice made a nice pass for the lead but Panunte would fight back. Lap 17 Susice would open a nice lead of about 5 car lengths. Lap 20 Panunte is once again on the charge and lap traffic would play havoc. The yellow flew with 2 to go for Nick Cupolo with problems in turn 3. Susice would grab the lead on the restart and would hold off Panunte, Mc Pherson Mark Dixon and B. J. Willard.
The always competitive Brian's Tire Repair Street Stock 20 lap feature, saw caution fever with Dave Small and Jason Fontaine leading the field to the green with Small taking the lead Fontaine grabbing the high side. The yellow flew on lap 2 as Ed McNamara and James Thompson got together. Small retook the lead on the restart with Fontaine and Billy Bleich Jr taking the runner up spot. Jeff Dayman worked his car with the car of Fontaine for 3rd but The yellow flew with a multi car jingle on lap 5. The lap 6 restart Small leading again but an outside pass by Bleich would take the lead on lap 7 with Small fighting back. Mark Fawcett found the turn 4 ditch but not to his liking. Bleich continued the lead on the restart with Fontaine 2nd with Fontaine take the high line and the lead on lap 13. Bleich would continue to challenge on the outside. Bleich switched lanes on lap 19 and made the pass for the win with Fontaine followed by Dayman, Roger Israel and Rob Disher rounding out the top 5.
The 15 lap Niagara Auto Sales Pro 4 Truck feature the field was led to the green by Hilary Haegens and Steve Vanderzanden with Haegens taking the lead and Vanderzanden giving chase. Lap 4 with Hilary and Brother Greg battling for 2nd. Billy Beales also made a nice move to take the third spot. Caution flew on lap 7 for Adam Williams coming to a stop. The lap 8 restart was aborted as they tried 3 wide. Beales took the lead on the restart with Greg Haegens and Bob Mc Namara on the charge. Contact was made by Bob McNamara and Beales sending McNamara tail for his trouble. Greg Haegens took the lead on lap 12 with 3 to go and Vanderzanden on the charge. Haegens would take his 1st ever win by 10 lengths with Vanderzanden, Kevin Conley, McNamara and Beales rounding out the top 5.
The 15 lap Ron's Automotive Mini Stock Feature was led to the green by Kyle Pelrine and Rocco Conte with Conte as the leader and Pelrine trying an inside charge. In third was the smoking Garnet Wilson. Lap 5 Pelrine made a nice dive to the bottom spot but no avail. A nice 3rd place battle took place with Wilson and Aaron Wiley with Wiley taking the spot. At the lap 8 mark 2nd place racer Pelrine started showing some
signs of smoke. Wiley made a nice move to take third spot with 3 to go. Conte did a great job to hold off the challenges of Pelrine, Wiley, Wilson and Even Curtis for the win.
POST RACE AFTERTHOUGHTS: Best wishes go to Wayne “Chopper” Wright after a recent Heart Attack as he will go in for surgery this week. Special thanks to former Speedway Owner Al Wagner for his tireless effort in prepping all the Speedway service vehicles. A $125.00 Bonus was added to the Street Stock feature top 3 from J. C. Auto. With the season opener in the books, drivers drew for their starting positions in the heats which brought about heads up starts to set up the feature events. Next week May 9th Tianna's Jewelers present the Mothers Day Special with General admission just $5.00 for adults with a food donations going Port Cares. Also part of the 4 division program the newly sponsored Frontier Auto Dismantler Pure Stocks will make their 2010 season debut and will alternate weeks with the Young Automotive Professional 358 Modifieds. Always remember to bring your walkman and tune to 89.9 on the FM band. As always the gates will open in the pits at 4:30 and the grandstands at 5:00 with racing beginning at 6:30.
